The Foundation’s funding has enabled significant physical improvements to the historical Clubhouse.
Projects
Preserving this remarkable, memorable building, so important to the neighborhood, the City and the State, as well as to the members of the Maryland Club itself, takes effort. The Foundation aims to help address the recurring challenges of appropriately restoring, repointing, repairing, and otherwise preserving architecturally and historically vital elements of this Clubhouse in Mount Vernon.
In the immediate future, several important projects at the Clubhouse require attention, with an estimated cost of $1.5 million. These will include Chimney capping and repointing, window and door restoration and painting, and roof replacement/repair.
Some of the projects completed with grant support from the Foundation are illustrated below.

West Wall Repointing
The western wall of the Clubhouse was in need of repointing, as there were numerous leaks that affected multiple rooms in the Club, causing plaster damage to the Card Room and other interior walls of the Clubhouse.
Porch Tile
Repairs made to a significant area of the North East corner of the Porch tile. The tile was cracked, allowing water damage directly below, to the Café room corner ceiling.

Governor’s Room
Water damaged a section of the coffered ceiling plasterwork. Expert plasterers reconstructed the ornate detail and replaced sections of the ceiling.
Fireplaces
Both fireplace chimneys in the Charles Street Grill were in dire need of restoration. Masonry work was required to avoid further crumbling and deterioration.

Card Room
Repairs began in 2023, during which old mortar was removed and replaced, and the Card Room’s water-damaged plasterwork was repaired.
